29 jan 2017 – A brave Alton Towers rollercoaster crash amputee has posed naked at a Manchester photography studio to inspire women with disabilities and low self-esteem. Vicky Balch took part in the tasteful photo shoot at Andrew Wood Photography after struggling with self-confidence and trolling on social media and hopes to ‘challenge what society regards as sexy’.

The 21-year-old was on the Smiler rollercoaster carriage crash in June 2015 and was so badly crushed that she lost her right leg. Ryan Lea, studio manager at the studios in Chorlton, praised Vicky’s bravery and said she has been an ‘amazing inspiration’ to other people. He told the M.E.N: “It was a pleasure having her in. She’s a lovely girl and we were so surprised that she dared to do it. “We didn’t want it to be glamour or trashy or obscene, we wanted it to be really tasteful and show off her body shape. “It was amazing to see how confident she was during the shoot. She was clearly so comfortable and loved every minute of it.

“The pictures have come out really well and are tastefully done.” It is the second time Vicky has been photographed at the studios on Barlow Moor Road after being encouraged by her best friend to visit last year. She took part in the boudoir photoshoot without her new bionic leg and felt empowered after seeing the pictures. Ryan said: “When Vicky came in she was really nervous, not sure what to expect and really panicking. She didn’t have a lot of confidence at all and started off wearing the prosthetic leg on. However in the first 10 or 15 minutes she felt comfortable enough to do it without it. Her confidence went from zero to really high. “After that she viewed the pictures and was crying her heart out.

“You could tell she didn’t think that’s how she looked and it was a great confidence booster for her. “The response to the pictures was amazing. We have had so many ladies come in just off the back of that including women who have suffered domestic violence, illness and body confidence issues. “Ladies can come in and be something different for the day and Vicky is a really good ambassador for that.” Vicky said she was so devastated after losing her right leg she struggled to see any future. She also battled to accept her changed body and was so self-conscious that she struggled to be intimate with boyfriends and allow them to see her naked.

Speaking to the Sunday People , she said: “I’ve had to learn to completely love my body all over again. I don’t think I’ll ever come to terms with what’s happened, but I love my body as it is. “I call them my battle scars and I’ve had to accept them. I don’t care who sees them now. I’ve been through a hell of a lot and that shows it. “The photographer asked me if I wanted them edited out of the pictures and I said, ‘No’. I’m not changing them. They’re part of me now. After the last photoshoot an 18-year-old girl with terminal cancer contacted me to say she thinks it’s amazing that I’m showing my scars off.

“I don’t think what’s happened to me can even compare to her and it makes me feel great that I’ve helped someone. I expect I will get trolled again, but I won’t let it affect me. “I know I’m doing it for a greater good. If I can show my scars off and it helps one person then it’s worth a thousand horrible messages or tweets. I am doing it for attention, but it’s not about me.” Alton Towers owner Operator Merlin Attractions was fined £5 million after admitting health and safety breaches over the crash.
